Furnace Operator – 2nd Shift

Pay: $16.50 per hour
Schedule: Monday–Wednesday, 4:30 PM–4:30 AM; Thursday, 4:30 PM–8:30 PM
Overtime: Overtime may be required or available based on business needs.

Position Summary

We are seeking a dependable and detail-oriented Furnace Operator to join our manufacturing team. The Furnace Operator is responsible for operating heat-treating furnaces and related equipment to alter the properties of selected materials according to established work instructions and specifications.

This position will operate furnaces, draw ovens, pit draws, transfer equipment, and other related machinery. The Furnace Operator will also perform hardness checks, monitor processing conditions, accurately document production data, and ensure finished parts meet blueprint and quality requirements.

Parts are quenched in oil or polymer within the furnace and removed after the prescribed processing time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Handle metal parts with precision and accuracy while inspecting for imperfections or defects.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with company policy and OSHA standards.
  • Load and unload baskets and prepare composite loads.
  • Inspect incoming loads from the previous process for proper loading conditions.
  • Operate the transfer car to safely move loads between furnaces and loading tables.
  • Change or discharge loads to and from furnaces.
  • Operate heat-treating furnaces according to established instructions and monitor alarm conditions.
  • Record production information in the Casemate controller/data system.
  • Check as-quenched surface hardness for conformance with blueprint specifications and accurately record results.
  • Check final hardness after the draw process for conformance with blueprint specifications and record results.
  • Properly tag and identify loaded containers.
  • Operate forklifts and other equipment as required, provided the appropriate certification has been obtained.
  • Report equipment malfunctions to Maintenance or the Heat Treat Supervisor.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance as necessary.
  • Perform other duties and tasks as assigned by supervision or management.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • 1–2 years of experience as a machine operator in a manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Proficiency with basic manufacturing tools and measuring instruments, including calipers, micrometers, fixed or telescopic gauges, and comparators.
  • Understanding of standard measurement principles and the ability to read blueprints, operating instructions, maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to work around oils and cutting fluids and perform frequent standing, bending, and lifting of heavy bar stock into feeding tubes.
  • Working knowledge of the manufacturing industry.
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination and strong attention to detail.
  • Basic math skills, with or without the use of a calculator.
  • Basic understanding of applicable federal and state regulations, including OSHA and EPA requirements.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and time-management skills.
  • Commitment to maintaining a clean and safe work environment and eliminating potential hazards.
  • Ability to follow company policies, procedures, and OSHA standards with a goal of achieving zero safety-related incidents.
  • Ability to work various schedules, including nights and weekends, as required.
  • Willingness and ability to learn, train, and expand knowledge based on company specifications and requirements.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma, GED, or vocational training such as Precision Machining preferred.
  • A combination of education, experience, and training may be considered in place of the stated requirements.
